Bella baskets
« on: June 03, 2008, 13:18:29 PM »
Here is something I have used most successfully. My baskets are now about three years old, and I plant them up fresh each season.

Wayne,
I agree that the basket principle works very well and introduce a whole new horison for gardening. Personally, I use the wire hanging baskets as I get it way cheaper (my son distributes them in South Africa and I have a 50% share in the business) and the coir liner gives excellent airation. I have used similar baskets to Bella also and they work as good. I do not know the price difference between the plastic and wire baskets lately.

The plastic bella's are around 80-100 bucks, but they don't dry out nearly as fast as the conventional ones, and they have a small reservoir which fills up with water.

The coir ones work nicely provided you line the inside with plastic to retain some of that moisture and then punch some holes in for drainage. That way they don't dry out too quickly.

Thanks Wayne!! I think we do have a problem in South africa that we do not have a good quality potting medium for baskets. I mix some superabsorb crystals or perlite in the normal potting media to increase water holding capacity.
You identified the biggest threat to hanging baskets - they require regular watering. But then, the more oxygen around the roots (compared to pots) is very beneficial to the plants!!!!!!

Hi Wayne,

Do you use a lot of hanging baskets in the gardens you design?

Not really Fritz.  I use them more for personal pleasure than in clients gardens.  If this were England I would be doing a roaring trade!
I have even tried getting to the shopping malls and municipalities to try and offer them a basket service, but no bites.  Wait till 2010...

Hi Wayne,
You are correct in saying wait till 2010. I think landscapers will have royal time in giving the stadiums and surroundings a good face lift. All the best for your business.

The primula basket looks great Wayne  :congrats:

I was thinking perhaps if I made holes in the liner of a wire basket I may be able to achieve a similar result
