Germinating Rain Lily seeds
« on: February 27, 2009, 18:07:08 PM »
I received some rain lily seeds in the post today, yippee. The remind me of hippie seeds, only smaller. Anyone with experience germinating? Do I use the floating method? What medium do I plant them in?

Rachel

I use the floating method to germinate and the same mix as for Hippeastrums.
When they sprout I transplant them.

Her is my Hybranthus Robustus Sedd tha t I floated half an hour ago.

Never regret anything that made you smile.

Abby and Rachel - help me, what is the floating method? Is that a test to see if the seeds are fertile? Like for cycad seeds when the floaters are not fertile and the ones that sink are good? ???

Rachel,
You can put them in virtually anything, they are very easy.

If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.

Rena, Piet posted a brilliant tutorial on the clivia forum about propagating hippie seeds using the floating method. Here's the link, its well worth the look

Rena,

It's my preferred method of germinating seeds that can be floated.

With the first lot of seeds I floated I got a 99% success rate and the second lot about a 50 - 60% success rate but in the second lot's defence, they were quite old by the time I got them, as they had been from KZN to GP, back to KZN and then back to GP again before I eventually got them - bless the post office!
