Freezia bulbs too late to plant now?
« on: August 19, 2009, 14:40:00 PM »
Sadly i bought my packet of freezia bulbs only this weekend and did not read the instructions on when to plant. now, i can wait and plant them this autumn, or... i can plant them now and leave them be and see what happens... I just don't want to kill them or something.

Can anybody advize me on what to do with my poor freezia bulbs? is it too late or should i risk it?

also, what pot is best? depth and so on for a pretty display?

Oh dear.... they should be planted mid April to May, 5cm under the soil surface.  It's their flowering time now.  Hmm, not sure what to advise you to do so that you can hang onto them for Autumn.  Store them in the fridge?? I'm sure someone here will be able to answer that part of your question

Welcome to the forum!

I am not by far an expert but the lady at our local nursery told me I could plant them but they would not flower this season.  They may still come up but not bloom.

Any advise from the experts among us?

fridge sounds... extreme... i think i might plant them anyways and keep my eye on them... water and feed and whatnot... they might bloom in the autumn again? as the temperature goes down?

Fridge isn't necessarily extreme - daylily seeds are stored in the fridge and amaryllis bulbs can also be stored in the fridge to delay their germination should you wish slightly later flowering.

If freesias go dormant they will probably not germinate until the right time anyway.  If they don't go dormant then I don't see any harm in trying...
