Germinating Camelia Japonica
« on: April 14, 2010, 16:54:57 PM »
I thought it was time for an update on the previous chapter :
This is how the seedpod looked....

and the dry seedpod

I've put the two seeds in cotton wool like in the old days!

Only one germinated, I've planted it with love! and hope for the best

After a while it started to show some green.....

and then shoot out.....

and started to grow.....

and grow...  this photograph was taken yesterday.
  THE END.... until next time.....

Abby, the mum is in the first photo.  She has the most beautiful double pink flowers.  I can't find the photograph now, but will post it as soon as I can find it... it must be somewhere between the thousands!
(I can't sit in front of the computer for long... broke my leg a few weeks ago... and at this stage I prefer lying on my back with the leg in the air!!)

So sorry about your leg  :'(

You need a laptop - they are great when you are incapacitated.
I use mine when I am away from the home base.

These are some of my Camelias I grew from seeds

It is amazing what beautiful blooms you can create.

I started growing my row of Camelias many years ago when I purchased the house and funds for plants were scarce.

When I went out on walks through the local park I used to collect seed pods.

Good thing too as that progeny of Camelias is preserved - the park is now a parking lot.

They seem to like our climate and like a lot of mulch and leaf litter - I sweep all the leaves and blossoms off the path back into the Camelia bed and these days they self sow. They are protected from the afternoon sun by the house.

My Camelias have never made seed pods - perhaps I've never looked properly...  A friend's mom would dearly love some Camelias and I've been wondering if I could get cuttings to grow using rooting powder  ??? ???

Abby you have some excellent flowers for seedlings, wish I had a lap top as it's our first meeting of the year for Gippsland Camellia group. I am sure they would be very impressed. Irene
