Summer squash vs winter squash
« on: May 13, 2011, 11:00:14 AM »
Hi all,

Another squash question...

I would like to know what typically qualifies as a summer squash and a winter squash.

Is it purely the difference between what is grown in summer vs what is grown in winter, or is there some other criterion involved?

So far, it would seem, that patty pans, gem squash and marrows seem to be classified as summer squash (looking at google images of summer squash) and that butternut and other pumpkin appears to be the winter squash.

What then about hubbard squash?

 ???

The entire pumpkin family grows during the summer months.
Could it be that they differentiate and classify those that are harvested semi mature (and thus harvested during summer) as summer squash and those that must be ripened (and thus harvested at end of summer/early winter) as winter squash? On this basis the Hubbard would also be a winter squash.

     Janine,
Bennie is right on.  Both grow in summer, but summer squash are harvested while young and tender, and must be eaten immediately.  Winter squash must ripen until frost kills the vine, then they can be stored all winter in a cool place.  Winter squash have a tough skin, and a high sugar content, and are delicious!
