something eating my gazania petals
« on: November 24, 2011, 16:08:06 PM »
Hi there everyone
I have really got into my gardening now and have lots of questions to ask.  Firstly my gazania petals are being eaten up by some creatures- don't know what- can anyone shed some light please? ??? I have got rid of the masses of snails that I had,so don't think it's them.  I don't like to spray my plants with poisons as want to do everything naturally.  Would love some advice

Childa - my gazanias are also still being eaten even though I put down snail bait - so I'd also like to know what else chomps the petals at an alarming rate - I thought it could be my tortoises but they can't get to the gazanias, unless they are becoming real acrobats!
Retired - now full-time gardener - and loving it!

Maybe small slugs?
I check my plants for them at night with a torch.

Don't know if you get them in SA, but here in Nam we have a tiny green grasshopper that comes out at night and chomps holes in leaves, leaving them looking like lace. My cannas are looking dismal. I don't spray poison either, they "moet maar eet". You just don't see them in the day to remove them manually.

I go out every night on a slug and snail hunt  :mean: with a torch weather permitting. I collect them in a container with vinegar and water - stops them from smelling and escaping. Wear gloves for the slime - very hard to wash off - YUK !!!

Me too Abby, but I just crush them underfoot. Something must eat them during the night, because I never see them in the mornings.
Unless there are nice big ones and I harvest them for personal consumption :mmm: LOL

Come and visit Nam and smuggle out a mongoose! They love snails, just like Michael.  ;)

I have another pest at the moment but I don't know how destructive they are - baby shongololos (centipedes). They are emerging from the ground after the first drops of rain. Can they eat holes in leaves? Nothing seems to enjoy eating salvia, yay. But the lovely black leaves of my cannas seem to be very tasty.

Shongos eat decaying leaf material, winners in the compost heap.

Michael, so can I stop chucking the shongos into the neighbour's garden?     :mmm:

thanks so much for all your advice :) I have been looking at night with a torch and so far have only seen a few beetles in other areas, not my gazanias and have found those little green crickets that you say eat holes in leaves, perhaps it's them, anyway I'll just have to leave them guzzling cos I aint gonna spray them with poisons!!!
