What to sow..
« on: May 02, 2012, 13:39:00 PM »
So guys, winter is starting in SA! What should I be sowing in my vegetable gardens ??? Last week I prepared the soil, so this week I need to get busy. Another question, how to sow onions. The seeds are too small to do one one directly in beds. Do I sow one by one in trays and then transplant or just sow in the beds trying to space them as best I can and then remove/transplant the ones that for clumps later when they are big enough. Can you transplant onions  ???
I cant say that I have spent enough time doing vegetables! Peas seem to grow very well in my soil :).

You can use an old trick
just ad a cup fine dry sand to the seeds
mix it together
and your seeds will have a good distance

This is what I intend doing this weekend:  Peas (put nitrogen back into the soil), baby cabbage, chinese cabbage, beetroot, swiss chard.  The weather is unseasonably warm, so I think this weekend will probably be the last.

Thanks all, I think I will be doing the peas, cabbage, chard, onions and beetroot thing this weekend. Dont know where the moon is but I will have to do it this weekend ;).
Thanks for the sowing tip bulborum, I will try that with the small seeds and sow directly into the beds. I have a lot of work ahead that I really want to get round to. Part of that includes closing my veg beds with shade net for protection against birds (and dogs) etc. But for now sowing will have to do! Can't wait!

;)Thanks for reminding me Michael - Blessed Be.
I came across some Asparagus seed during my wanderings.  Anyone know anything about how to grow Asparagus from seed?  They say on the packet that you can plant seed all year round?  Then the long two year wait to harvest  ::)

Hello Kareen

Best to buy F1 hybrid seeds
expensive but good
probably $35,- for 100 seeds
the cheap normal seeds are lot less productive
with a lot of bended shoots

best seeding moment is early spring 20?C inside
two weeks later they germinate
six weeks later replant

Here you find in Dutch a lot of info and pictures Asparagus

google Asparagus F1 for sorts

Thanks Roland, the Asparagus will have to wait for a while, still got winter ahead of us now.   I will try and wrestle through the Dutch  ;)  I may pick up a bit here and there
