Vegetable plants die suddenly
« on: February 01, 2013, 12:05:34 PM »
I had about a dozen tomato plants. They flourished until buds formed then one by one started wilting and dying within a few days.
The same is now happening to my brinjil plants.
There has been no problems with the roots so I just do not understand
why they die so suddenly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not a worm hollowing out the stem maybe?

Stems not damaged by worms.
Here in Durban we regularly get some rain in the evenings.
The tomatoes I kept water off the leaves, but not the brinjils.
I normally have a problem with rootnot nematodes, but in this
instance, no signs of this on the roots.

Try to Google "botrytis cinerea in tomato"
and have a look if you mean that

Here is a pic. The brinjals near wall on left still OK.
One nearest camera was fine yesterday but is
wilting today. Will be dead tomorrow.

Yes
looks very much as botrytis cinerea
you have to spray otherwise so all are dead
same illness as in many veggies

just google botrytis cinerea
and have a look what is for sale in your country

There was a lot of reading matter on this disease.
Most was too technical for me. I gather that it is a fungus
so presumably I need to spray with a fungicide.

From the holes in the leaves your plants also appear to be under attack from some insects which are probably making your plants vulnerable to fungal disease - check for small beetles like brijal ladybug.

I have checked the leaves at night with a torch but found nothing.

Bacterial wilt? :(  Deadly for tomatoes.
