Hi all,

I found this growing by the side of the road on one of my cycle rides. I took a few cuttings - all of which rooted easily. I don't believe it's a weed because this is the only one I've ever seen. All parts have the most delicious fruity scent when crushed - I have to resist the urge to eat it.

I'd be most grateful if someone could ID this for me.

Hi Rena,

The flowers are about 5cm in diameter. The shrub I took the cuttings from was about 50cm high with a 50cm spread. The flowers are wonderfully soft to the touch, much like the feel of silk tassles.

Any ideas?

This one has got me stumped - I know I've seen it somewhere ....... The lovely colour of the flower caught my eye but for some reason or other I seemed to think it was a weed.....

I'm trying to remember ;D

I  know,  Rena - it drives me crazy having a plant in my garden  I know nothing about. >:(  I don't even know whether it's annual or perennial - but for some reason I just feel it looks perennial.

The other strange thing is I cycle that same route every second week,  and the original plant seems to have just disappeared! Altogether very mysterious. The flowers are reminiscent of Scotch Thistle, but this is altogether a very different plant.

It would be so great if someone could enlighten me (us)

Wow, Rena!  ;D I can't believe it - how did you manage to find it?! I had given up all hope - even my faithful 'Botanica' doesn't have it listed.

But definitely - this is it - Brazilian Batchelor's Buttons! I'm so grateful to you!  :woohoo:

I just love it when an unknown plant gets a name!
I was paging through an old overseas magazine (Garden Answers) before passing it on to a friend and there it was - I just knew I'd seen it somewhere and am actually very impressed with my what I thought was my "failing" memory ;D
Mitch - guess who's first in line for one of the first babies???

Rena, if you give me your address I will happily send you some seeds - which I think will be ready in a couple of weeks.

So far it seems a wonderfully rewarding plant. It's been smothered in flowers since I planted it, and gives off the most delicious scent when crushed. I've already made quite a few cuttings (which strike easily). If you were in a similar area to me (Howick surrounds), I could drop off a plant or two for you...  :)
