Growing Dietes grandiflora From Seed
« on: July 16, 2013, 00:21:56 AM »
Hello Everyone,

How are you?

Yesterday morning I had the good fortune of coming across a stand of, mostly untended, Dietes grandiflora with seed pods ready to be harvested. I, of course, collected the seed pods and brought them home. Since I love these plants, and don't have any, I would love to grow some. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to germinate the seed, and raise the seedlings?

Thank you in advance,
Joh

The seed grows so easily here just where they fall that I've never actually sown any!  I'm forever taking seedlings out that have sprung up in my pots and garden beds and finding new homes for them.  I do have a few variegated leaf dietes that I want to sow and intend doing so in a pot in sandy soil - if they come up like weeds with no attention at all in the garden they hopefully do even better with a little TLC :)

Thank you, that is wonderful news! It turns out I had the two species confused, I have Dietes bicolor not grandiflora. But, they're still beautiful flowers.. I will sow them in a few days time.

Thanks but I do have the bicolours in the garden as well.  I'll send you some of the tall grandiflora and also some of the shorter more compact one which is great for smaller areas.

PM your address to me.

Hi,

Just an update. Three of my D. bicolor seeds have sprouted this far, and I'm expecting more in the next week or so....  :woohoo: ;D

I read that I had to start the seeds off in a shallow tray, and then prick them out as soon as the shoot started to show. They seem so small, that I couldn't understand why. But, I decided to give it a go anyway. Turns out there's a good reason....

It seems that it's a determined species. :) I have pricked out six seedlings, and all of them have a roooot. They're all doing well, and are turning a nice green colour.
