Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) seedlings!
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:34:04 AM »
I have been trying to grow Acer Palmatum for a while now with no success. I understand that the seeds have deep dormancy and being in the Southern hemisphere in the best ever warm climate Centurion South Africa (he he) you need to follow process to break dormancy and get the seeds to germinate. So earlier the year I decided to buy a few grams of seed (about 50 seeds) from a guy in France. Before this I only bought small quantities of 5 seeds per order because they are expensive (at around R5 per seed, expensive to me OK).

So this time I read the instructions again and saw that the seeds needed warm stratification for 3 weeks followed by cold stratification for about 3 months before coming out of dormancy. This time I did not go through much trouble, threw the seeds into a plastic bag with slightly moist coco coir, did not seal the bag, and left it in my "stoep" area where it is nice and warm. An thus we enter warm stratification step 1.

This past weekend was time to take the seeds to step 2, cold stratification. I was still busy planting some other seeds when Claudette my wife said there are things growing in my maple seeds! Would you believe, I had 7 little Acer Palmatums that sprouted! Small things yes I know, but I am SO excited! The rest of the seeds are still in "warm stratification" now with the hope that I will get more little ones before sending them to the fridge! My first Maples, very exciting. They are such lovely trees!

Hi there.

I also love these trees. If you've been to the Far East in Autumn or spring you can't help but be amazed.

Love them in bonsai form as well. (Korean Bonsai museum)

Sosuseowon - South Korea

Just remember that a large number of these trees are not strong growers, and are often grafted on a more robust rootstock.

Regards.

Hi everyone. Talking about Japanese Maples, here is a link to a Korean page of the Buseoksa temple in Autumn.

Same area in Summer.

We miss so much of the www not being able to search in other languages! Luckily we have a few words of Korean.

Regards.

Another 3 germinated. Transplanted them yesterday into little pots as well. I see another 2 starting to sprout as well. Can't believe I am so lucky with this batch! Exciting.
